The Montgomery County DA's office just said Adrian Peterson's decision to whip his child with a tree branch exceeded "reasonable discipline" and that is why he has been indicted for felony child abuse.
The DA says parents are allowed to use discipline -- presumably some physical force -- but it has to be in line with reasonable community standards.
The DA said reports that a grand jury had previously rejected the case are false -- the grand jury that indicted Peterson on Friday is the only to ever hear the case.
The DA says the grand jury heard the case for several weeks before making it's decision.
The stakes are high for Peterson ... if he's convicted of the felony he could serve up to two years behind bars.

George Zimmerman allegedly threatened to kill a man in Florida earlier this week during a road rage incident ... and cops pulled over Zimmerman to grill him about it.
According to the Lake Mary PD, a man named Matthew Apperson called 911 on September 9 and told the operator Zimmerman had pulled up next to him and began yelling, "Why are you pointing your finger at me? I f***ing kill you. Do you know who I am?"
Apperson says he drove away to a store where Zimmerman followed him to continue the verbal barrage. Apperson called 911 from inside the store, but according to cops ... Zimmerman was gone when they arrived.
Apperson claims 2 days later, he saw Zimmerman parked outside his work, and called police again. Cops responded and pulled over Zimmerman near the office. After questioning him, police decided not to press charges -- mainly because there was no independent witness.
For what it's worth ... Apperson is white. Also, he was carrying a gun at the time of the alleged run-in, but he has a permit for it.

Sources at Yorkville Endoscopy tell us Dr. Lawrence Cohen stepped down after the board asked him to do so -- however the board isn't directly blaming him for Joan's death.
A rep for the clinic confirmed he was ousted from his position as medical director.
According to our sources ... the board's issue with Cohen is that he allowed Joan's ENT doc to step in and perform an authorized procedure. Reportedly, that procedure was a biopsy ... and Joan went into respiratory and arrest while it was being done.
Cohen is a world renowned gastroenterologist ... and also co-owner of Yorkville. He's been on administrative leave since Joan's procedure on August 28.

Sentencing for Pistorius is still weeks away. There is no minimum sentence for culpable homicide under South African law and the typical maximum sentence is 15 years, with the average sentence being about 5-8 years.
Pistorius was found not guilty on two of the three weapons charges he was facing. He was only found guilty of the charge involving a shooting at a restaurant. That charge has a maximum sentence of five years.
Pistorius admitted to shooting and killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on Valentine's Day of 2013 … but maintained he thought she was an intruder.

CBS has pulled the plug on a song in the pre-game show that will air before the Ravens game Thursday night ... and even though CBS isn't acknowledging it ... it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out a song featuring Rihanna wouldn't sit well.
CBS Sports Chairman Sean McManus says, "We thought journalistically and from a tone standpoint, we needed to have the appropriate tone coverage."
The material that was axed ... a comedic segment featuring Don Cheadle doing a narration over Jay Z's song "Run This Town" featuring Rihanna.
The segment will be replaced by a discussion of Roger Goodell's recent comments about the Ray Rice incident.
Obviously ... Rihanna is a domestic abuse victim and it would be awkward to play her music.
